Philosophy
I transcend the notion of design as an individual pursuit, elevating it into a harmonious collaboration of various craftsmen and their timeless skills. Beyond the spotlight on the artist, my vision embraces the essence of traditional artisans—the calligrapher, carpenter, wood turner, stone shaper, and brass cutter—all converging to create a symphony of elegance and sophistication unattainable through mass production.
The designer, in this context, assumes the role of a master artisan, guiding and facilitating the collective dedication of these craftsmen. I channel my expression through the medium of their craft, acting as a conduit to infuse my designs with the rich legacy of classical craftsmanship. Inspired by the profound connection between craft and art in Islamic traditions, my work represents a return to the origin—a quest for truth. In Islamic culture, art and craft seamlessly intertwine, manifesting in everyday objects and surroundings, becoming an integral part of human consciousness. In contrast to Western trends that relegated crafts to museum exhibits, Islamic art flourished in the fabric of daily life.
However, the demand for traditional crafts waned with the influence of Western modernity and colonialism. The shift in sensibilities led to a decline in craftsmen’s livelihoods, disrupting the cycle of master-apprentice relationships and hindering the development of new techniques through trial and error.
Yet, my design collection is a testament to the resilience of craftsmanship. By collaborating with skilled artisans, I revive and reinterpret traditional practices, fostering innovation and ensuring the continued growth of this intricate ecosystem. Through the lens of a specific project or piece, I invite you to witness the marriage of design and craftsmanship—a celebration of heritage, a defiance of cultural erasure, and a testament to the enduring beauty of the artisanal journey.”
